Joanie said, “I would like to see the word ‘cougar’ along with the "N" word and the "F" word deleted from the American vocabulary. We have no similar insulting word that we apply to the more typical old man dating a young woman. And even in that situation, the woman is called a "gold digger" yet there is no similar insulting name to call the man. Why is that?

One of the issues often raised by women age 50+ is older men dating younger women. So, it's always a relief to hear of a young woman who has thrown up her hands in frustration at dating older men and withdrawn from the dating pool. This week's candidate didn't leave without some serious finger pointing at me for making matters difficult for her.
Older single women can breathe a sigh of relief. A 31-year-old has removed herself from the pool of women seeking older men.
And she blames me for what happened.
She searched my Finding Love After 50 Website for information about younger women dating older men and found a column I had written on the topic.

Part 1 - Two weeks ago, this column featured a story about Clyde and Bonnie, an Orange County, California, couple who met online after Bonnie lowered her age by seven years in her online profile. With her age listed as 62--her true age--she was only attracting "old guys," men she had no interest in dating.
Encouraged by friends who told her she looked far younger than her true age, Bonnie went from being 62 to 55 with a few keystrokes on her computer.
Last autumn, within an hour of her new age appearing on Match.com, Bonnie received an email from Clyde. Her strategy worked, she and Clyde are getting married in July.
Dating the age gap. Older men dating younger women and older women dating younger men always stirs the pot.

In last week's newsletter about the 25-year-old woman lawyer who is dating the 40-year-old man, I asked for your comments. I got an earful.
A few of you took me to task, and in retrospect, rightly so. You said my comments were snide, almost sarcastic. Some felt the lawyer was not "full of herself," as I had stated.
Many felt that the 15-year age difference wasn't monumental and shared their similar age-difference experiences.
Thanks for being honest and for keeping me in line. I let my personal feelings get in the way of objective journalism.

Here's a bit of a change-of-pace topic today. I need your help responding to this young woman's email.
She wrote, "I recently read your article (on the Finding Love After 50 website) in which you incorporated the reactions that older women had to the idea of men their age looking for younger partners."
She continued, "While, as an attorney and not a social scientist, I am not qualified to comment on wide-spread trends, I take offense at the assumption by you that a younger woman dating an older man is always either a gold-digger or a silly tart who is unwilling to take care of the needs of her older counter-part."
