Why older men date younger women

In my last column, single women over 50 aired their opinions and frustrations about older men dating younger women. Women responded in droves. Many asked, "Why do men do this? What are they thinking? What's in their heads?"

Some men were willing to answer those questions and brave enough to identify themselves. Perhaps the insights shared by these forth right men will help older women lure guys back.

Tom Rath, Stanton, said, "I'm 59. The majority of women I meet in my age bracket are not attractive emotionally or physically. I get very tired of hearing about what a great man her ex or deceased husband was."

"There are many great reasons for dating younger women," wrote Joe, Garden Grove. "Older women resent you; older men envy you. Would you rather go to an Incubus or Fleetwood Mac concert? (Note from Tom: I had to ask who Incubus was.) When you are looking for a 'pre-owned' truck, do you want low mileage or high mileage?"

Explaining that he is new to the dating scene, Joe Moros, 55, San Clemente, said, "Since I shaved my head, trimmed my beard to a goatee and lost 15 pounds, I'm told I look 10 years younger. Naturally, I want to date younger women who can keep up with me."

Bob Banka, divorced, Costa Mesa, says he's 65 but looks 50: "I've been physically active all my life and have a passion for slender women and found this more prevalent in younger females. Would I date close to my age? Of course, but they would have to meet my criteria."

Keith, 65, San Juan Capistrano: "My own caveman, naturalist's theory is that men will always go for the younger women because older women can no longer produce offspring, therefore the natural tendency is to be attracted to the young, fertile ones."

Tony Badillo, Dallas, 61, e-mailed, "Older women are too set in their ways, have aged too much and are too independent.

"Many older women are too busy appearing untouchable and super dignified, conveying the impression that they don't need any man."

So that's the scoop on why men attempt to date younger women.

Perhaps these guys should rethink their positions. I used to pursue younger women, but my partner is within one year of my age and I've got the greatest relationship I could hope for.

Gary Moe, Fountain Valley, "Enjoy your column, although now that I have a 'steady,' I read it more for entertainment than for how-to tips."

Response: Entertainment? Hey Gary, this is very serious stuff!
