TUES                          6:30 PM            FULLERTON WEEKLY BEGINNER HIKE

O: Come hike with our social group on this regular weekly beginner's hike of 4-5 miles in the gentle hills of Fullerton.  We rotate through the numerous trails in the area each week to provide new experiences.  Meet every Tuesday starting in March and ending in October each year.  Meet at NE end of Laguna Lake in Fullerton.  From Harbor Blvd., go W on Hermosa, then L on Lakeside.  Wear sturdy boots, bring water & $$ for optional dinner afterwards.  Leaders: Ellen Clegg, Steve Feld, Martin Kluck, Jacqueline Meese, Bill Morgan, Joel Ortmann, and Gary Osborn.

Join us for a moderately-paced 4-mile walk around Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley on flat terrain.  Fit beginners welcome.  Optional dinner or snacks afterwards.  Meet in the parking lot of the park at Brookhurst and Heil behind the basketball courts.  Rain cancels.  Bring water.  Leaders: Bart Bartlow, Shilo Bartlett, Gloria Nafel, Ana Juarez, Kathy Shapiro.

WED   6:30-8:30PM                    PUENTE HILLS CONDITIONING HIKE

O: Moderately paced 5-6-mile hike in the lush canyons of the Puente/Whittier Hills.  Please, no beginners.  Enjoy this Emerald City Hike as the sun sets in the west.  700' gain up long switchbacks and trails with varying routes.  Wear hiking boots and bring water.  Rain cancels.  Be prompt to enjoy the sunset.  Meet at south end of 7th Avenue where street ends and turn right on Orange Grove to park on street.  Use 7th Ave. exit off Pomona Fwy, go south to Orange Grove.  Leaders: Steve Feld, Bill Gaskill, Jerry Johnson, and Jeff Yann.  For info call Steve Feld.

SAT        8:00 AM                                PETERS CANYON CONDITIONING HIKES

O: Fast paced conditioning hike, 6 mi RT, 700' gain. No beginners or Tigers! From 5 Fwy, N on Jamboree, or from 55 Fwy E on Chapman. Take Canyon View into parking area. Bring water, lugsoles, $3 for parking or have permit. Rain cancels. (Important Note: If park is closed, meet in Taco Bell parking lot, corner Chapman/Jamboree). SAT        7:50 AM              Long Beach El Dorado Nature Ctr Walk

O: Brisk to moderate paced 4-mi rt. walk on flat terrain.  Meet at the El Dorado Library parking lot, Studebaker Rd near Spring Street to ID many native birds, learn about flora and fauna along the way, and marvel at the creation of lakes and ecosystems in the midst of urban development.  Rain cancels, drizzle goes.  Comfortable walking shoes, optional breakfast at the El Dorado Golf Course restaurant following the walk.  Leaders: Joe Maynard, Donna Jean Barker, Diana Lejins, Jim Mohr and Todd Williams.

OCT 8 FRI         7:00 PM    OUTINGS PLANNING MEETING

All welcome!  Plan, schedule and coordinate events for coming months.  Bring your calendar.  Learn how to plan events or how to become a leader.  (LTC candidates & graduates welcome!).  You don't have to be a leader to host a social event.  Think ahead.  More people show up to your event if published in chapter schedule.  Write-ups due Nov 1 (budgets due Oct 15) to be published in the Angeles Chapter Schedule 298 (Mar 1 to July 4, 2005).  Volunteers welcome.  Also work on new committees: Little Hikers, backpacking & 20s & 30’s.  Ski Committee just completed their winter schedule so they will probably come and party!  Refreshments served. OCT 9  SAT  10am      Summer's End Beach Party Balboa Penninsula

O: [OCSS 20s/30s, LA 20s/30s] Celebrate the end of summer!  Volleyball nets, hoops, rollerblading.  Bring beach toys, games, volleyballs and basketballs, speedos, bikinis, sneakers, hat, sunscreen, towel, 2 quarts water for the possible walk and binoculars (for wildlife spotting only, of course).  Bring snacks to share and your own lunch, cash for parking and food.  Meet 10:00 am on the sand at level of Street 13 in Balboa Peninsula. Take 405 fwy to 55 fwy west (Newport Blvd) to the end.  Where it makes a sharp turn to left, it changes into West Balboa Blvd.  Take that and around Street 13, look for parking.  Challenge your navigation skills by consulting the Thomas Guide.  Rain cancels. OCT 15         FRI                                                                   BUDGET PLAN DEADLINE

Send a budget plan for any fundraising event that charges a fee, requires an advance, a deposit or reimbursement of expenses along with a copy of the write-up to Donna Specht (donnaspecht@juno.com).  Calls for assistance welcome.  Note: With the approval of our new bylaws by the Angeles Chapter on July 27, 2003: 6.2 "Announcements of fundraising events shall indicate the intended use of the proceeds."   So!  If your event is a chapter or OCSS fundraiser you need to contact outings chair prior to submitting a write-up.

OCT 17    SUN        6:30 AM           FOX (5033'), CONDOR PEAK (5460'), IRON (5635')

O: Climb 3 peaks minutes from civilization.  Enjoy streams, chaparral, and conifer forests. Strenuous 15-mile loop hike with 4000' gain & steep and slippery spots. Meet North OC rideshare point or 8AM at trailhead for this 9-hour hike. Park at mile marker 4.50 on Big Tujunga Canyon Rd. Bring Adventure Pass. Short 2-mile car shuttle. Bring 3 qts water, lunch, lugs, hat, sunscreen and 10 essentials. Leader Joel Kenyon. Co-leader: Gloria Nafel.

OCT 23 SAT      9am            20s&30s Billy Goat Hike, Whiting Ranch

O:  The trek up much of this hike is shaded by towering oaks, except for the Billy Goat Trail which offers great views of the park.  5 miles r/t, 1025' gain.  Steep in some spots, but we will take those at a slow pace.  Beginners in good condition welcome.  No tigers, please.  Bring: sturdy shoes, 2 qts water, hat, sun protection, $ for lunch afterwards at local restaurant if interested.  Meet at Whiting Ranch Entrance Plaza next to the Ralphs shopping center.  Corner of Bake Parkway and Portola in Lake Forest. OCT 23       SAT        5:30 PM                                                DINNER & SYMPHONY

To open its new season of free concerts, the La Mirada Symphony will play an overture by Glinka, the Swan of Tuonela by Sibelius, Konzertstuck for Four Horns by Schumann and the Brahms 2nd Symphony.  The concert begins at 8:00 PM.  Many of us gather for dinner at 5:30 at the Sizzler east of the Theater on the corner of Rosecrans & Adelfa,  The La Mirada Theater is located at 14900 La Mirada Blvd., just south of Rosecrans.  Hosts: Bonnie Coons,  Fred Lazzelle

O: Moderately paced 7-mile rt, 900' gain loss hike on the East Ridge and Bell Canyon Loop Trails.   Hike through sage and chaparral covered hillsides, prickly pear cactus and grassy slopes, with magnificent views of San Juan Canyon, Santiago Peak, and the Santa Ana Mountains.  Enjoy fall colors of the shadowy oak and sycamore woodlands.  Bring 3 qts. water, lugs, sunscreen, snack and $3 parking fee.  Meet 8:30AM at Orange Co. Nov 20-21              Sat-Sun                 Mount Inspiration (5560'), Quail Mountain (5800')

O: Walk off the bird, the Thanksgiving turkey bird that is!  4-mile round trip easy hike through rare and beautiful Torrey pines atop the coastal bluffs south of Del Mar.  Spectacular views, ocean breezes, & chance to explore some of the fascinating tide pools & rock formations.  Light hiking boots ok, bring 1 qt water, snack & sun protection.  Fit beginners & well behaved tigers welcome.  Gather at a famous brewery & pizza parlor in Carlsbad after hike for a no-host party with new friends.  Great newcomer hike!  Bring a friend!  Meet at the Huntington Beach rideshare at 8:15 AM depart 8:30 AM or South Orange County rideshare at 9am depart 9:15 AM.  Call us or send E-mail to lynnrheath@juno.com.  Ldrs: Lorraine Harris & Lynn Heath.


 

DEC 11                                      SAT    Annual Winter Dance OCSS Fundraiser

 

 
 

O: Come and see why OCSS is known for its great social events. Dress is casual but elegant and leave your lugs at home.  Mix, mingle, and dance the night away to live music! Happy Hour starts at 7 pm. Then be ready to dance, dance and dance!  We supply the finger foods. Enjoy beer and wine at reasonable prices. This is a great event for newcomers. Only $10 per person. Location:  Fountain Valley Recreation Center, 16400 Brookhurst, Fountain Valley. 405 Freeway to Brookhurst north, go approximately 1 mile north and turn right into Mile Square Park. I: (HPS, OC Sierra Singles) Sat we hike Whale approx 9-mi 2300' gain cross country with bouldering and lots of cactus in Anza-Borrego State Park.  Car camp in the park Sat night, State Park use/parking fee applicable.
